GAIA's Evolution

  • 1970's to present: growing grassroots movement against incineration and for alternatives"

  • June 2000: Clean Production Training at Lowell Center for Sustainable Production in US. The idea for an international alliance fighting against waste incineration was born.

  • Two names were given to reflect two themes of work: Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance and Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives

  • June- November 2000: Outreach to environmental health activists around the world

  • November-December 2000: GAIA Planning and Launch meetings were held in Johannesburg, South Africa prior to its launch on December 2000.

  • December 2000: GAIA was formally launched with 75 members from 23 countries.

  • March 2001: GAIA Secretariat was established in the Philippines

  • Today: 360 members in 66 countries, many successful projects
