EVENTS and ACTIVITIES

Mozambique. The environmental activist group Livaningo organized a protest in front of the World Bank Office in Maputo, Mozambique to protest the institution’s funding of waste incinerators in developing countries. The activists were wearing masks to signify the dangers of incineration to health and environment.

The group was able to distribute 3,000 pamphlets in just an hour. The activity was well covered by the Mozambican press. For more information, e-mail: Anabela Lemos

PLANNED EVENTS and ACTIVITIES

Egypt. The Association of Medical Students for Social Responsibility (Ahmed Geneid) will be at the INC7 of the Stockholm Convention on POPs to lobby delegates.

Mozambique. Livaningo will have a press conference to release the GAIA Report (summary translated into Portuguese by Livaningo). The GDA will also be marked with the distribution of anti-incineration pamphlets in Maputo.

Nigeria. The Society for Water and Public Health Protection plans to create awareness on waste and incineration problems by distributing information to NGOs, CBOs, government departments and the media.

Sierra Leone. The Friends of the Earth will issue a memorandum to the Government and join the global release of the GAIA Report "Waste Incineration: A Dying Technology."

South Africa. The Fairest Cape Association in South Africa is participating in the GDA, as part of their task of creating public awareness of the consequences of poorly managed waste. This is of particular importance as four of the existing six landfill sites in the Unicity of Cape Town will have to close within the next five years, and there are suggestions that the solution to this problem would be incineration. The Association will promote the benefits of integrated waste management in a series of information and skills building activities to be conducted in disadvantaged communities.

groundWork will send out press releases on that day concerning the incineration of mercury waste, using the case studies of Thor Chemicals and Vissehoek. Letters to concerned government departments will also be sent. Letters to government officials on this issue will also be sent.

The Habitat Council, along with the Environmental Justice Networking Forum, will participate in the GDA by sending information to environmental journalists of leading papers in Cape Town as well as to provincial and national authorities, linking it to the application for a hazardous waste incinerator at Swartklip.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance will also participate in the Global Day of Action.

Swaziland. Yonge Nawe will be campaigning against the health-threatening methods of managing healthcare waste in clinics and hospitals around Swaziland.

Tanzania. The Agenda for Environment and Responsible Development will work with media and publicize the GAIA Report on waste incineration. The Mountain Conservation Society, on the other hand, is sponsoring an anti-pollution concert for the benefit of affected children. The Zanzibar Youth Forum is also supporting the GDA.

Togo. The Youth Volunteers for the Environment is joining the Global Day of Action by disseminating information to various stakeholders.

Uganda. The following groups in Uganda are taking part in the Global Day of Action on 14 July 2003: Ecovic Mukono, Kadetfu, Judicial Service Committee, Prodiversity Conservationists, Radio Uganda, Uganda Biodiversity Network,
and the Uganda NGO Coalition for Sustainable Development.

Zimbabwe. Busani Bafana will issue a press release and possibly organize a press conference, logistics permitting.
