Brazil.
5 and 6 June 2003, Sao Vicente andCubataol.
ACPO, the
Brazilian NGO that aims to protect the environment
and public health from persistent organic
pollutants (POPs), organized events in Sao
Vicente and Cubatao on 5 and 6 June 2003
to press for the definitive solution to
the environmental disaster caused by the
Rhodia Company (a subsidiary of the French
company Rhone-Poulenc) in Baixada Santista
region in Brazil. The activities were held
in commemoration of the 10th year of closure
of the notorious chemical plant and also
in observance of the GAIA Global Day of
Action on waste and incineration on 14 July
2003. |

| Argentina.
Taller Ecologista de Rosario, Centro
Ecologista RENACER, Vecinal de Beltrán,
Grupo de Vecinos de Capitán Bermúdez,
Grupo Ecologista Bogado and other
groups will discuss the state of incineration
in Argentina, their latest campaign victories
and future strategies and the integration
of local groups into the global anti-incineration
movement in a conference entitled "Argentina
en GAIA" (Argentina in GAIA).
Fundacion
para la Defensa del Ambiente
will elicit public awareness and action
as regards major waste incinerators operating
in the Cordoba province. The group will
likewise mark the Global Day of Action
(GDA) by reviewing a case it won against
an incineration facility that was violating
the provincial control requirements.
Diana
Carrero, will run a special radio
program on incineration and will make
a comparison between the campaigns against
incineration in Argentina and in other
countries. Silvana Buján will run
a special radio program on incinerator
impacts, with interviews.
ONG
Puelches will distribute information
on the harmful impacts of waste incineration.
Asociación
Vecinal Moronense (A.V.M), Multisectorial
de Tandil and VIVIR will join
the global launch of the GAIA Report "Waste
Incineration: A Dying Technology." |

Argentina will issue a press
release on the occasion of the GDA.
Coalición
Ciudadana Anti Incineración, Reconciliarnos
con la Tierra, Acción por la Biodiversidad,
Alihuen, Colegio de Arquitectos de la
provincia de Buenos Aires, Comisión
de Medio Ambiente. Jorge Horacio Rabey
(Ce.Pro.Nat.), Grupo Ecologista "25
de Mayo" are also taking
part in the GDA in Argentina. |

The Association to Combat POPs organized
events in Sao Vicente and Cubatao on 5
and 6 June 2003 to demand for the definitive
solution to the environmental disaster
caused by the Rhodia chemical plant in
Baixada Santista region in Brazil. The
activities were held to commemorate the

to observe the GAIA Global Day of Action

July 2003. ACPO will work with the media
on the GDA and raise issues pertaining
to POPs and incineration.

The
Amigu di Tera/Friends of the Earth is preparing
for information meetings for other NGOs
to generate critical awareness on incineration
and facilitate the formation of a coalition
that will oppose a proposed incinerator
in the Caribbean island. The GAIA Report
on waste incineration will be adapted and
use for the local campaign. |

Salvador.
CESTA/Friends of the Earth will conduct
a press conference to denounce some incineration
practices in the country and get public
opinion against these practices. |

Haiti.
The Collectif Haitien pour la Protection
de l'Environnement et un Developpement
Alternatif will organize a national day
of public awareness on waste and incineration,
with a press conference and radio talks.
Mexico.
Greenpeace Mexico will take part in the
global launch of the GAIA Report "Waste
Incineration: A Dying Technology."
The Periodismo para Elevar la Conciencia
Ecologica is publishing an article on
incineration. The Asociacion Ecologica
Santo Tomas A.C. and the Academia Mexicana
de Derecho Ambiental are also preparing
activities for the GDA.
Puerto
Rico.
The environmental coalition AMENESER will
participate in the Global Day of Action
against waste incineration.
Uruguay.
The REDES Amigos de la Tierra will send
a press release to the media on the problems
with medical waste incineration, and hold
a protest in Paysandu against an incinerator
operating there.
