The Consumers’ Association
of Penang (CAP) and the Sahabat
Alam Malaysia (SAM), the local affiliate
of Friends of the Earth, are jointly hosting the GAIA
Global Meeting 2003.
CAP is a grassroots
non-profit, non-governmental organization linking
consumer issues with environment and development issues.
It was established in 1969 to promote critical awareness
and responsible action among consumers in order to
uphold their inherent rights and interests against
abuse and malpractice in the marketplace. CAP is a
fearless advocate of the people's right to a healthy
and sustainable environment. It has championed the
interest of citizens and communities against corporate
lies and insatiability, toxic pollution and unsustainable
use and management of land and other natural resources.
SAM was founded in
1977 to combat worsening environmental deterioration
triggered by the country's rapid development. SAM
joined Friends of the Earth International in 1983,
and publishes a number of books in English and in
Bahasa Malaysia. The group's campaign work encompasses
pollution, land-use, deforestation, fisheries, energy,
water, dams, agriculture, indigeneous people's rights
and tourism. It has offices in Penang and Sarawak.

"...for their exemplary struggle to save the
tropical forests of Sarawak."
Both
CAP and SAM are founding members of Waste
Not Asia (WNA), a network of citizens' groups
and individuals committed to promoting clean production
and a zero waste-oriented society. WNA is GAIA’s
regional arm in Asia. |
