The Berkeley Ecology Center and GAIA organized a Zero Waste Fellowship for activists from NGO's around the world, to continue to combat the construction garbage incinerators in their respective countries and to provide an alternate vision of Zero Waste. The fellows are all active in Zero Waste programs in their home countries, and the goal of the fellowship is to provide a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences to reduce waste. The fellowship also provided hands-on training in setting up recycling and related programs, as well as insights into the role of NGOs, public education and policymaking in promoting waste reduction.

The learning and information sharing happened three ways: the fellows learned from the experienced Berkeley recyclers, they learned from each other and the Berkeley training crew learned just as much from the visitors.

The Fellowship was held last June 25 to July 13, 2002 in Berkeley, California, USA.

The Ecology Center is one the oldest operating recycling programs in the country and was among the first to power its fleet of trucks with biodiesel - a non-petroleum based fuel. The Ecology Center is also a membership organization, benefits of which includes a quarterly magazine- Terrain- discounts at its bookstore - alerts from its Environmental Information Center. The Ecology Center operates the two farmers markets and sponsors such projects as Baystep which promotes transportation alternatives, BC and E which promotes energy conservation, farm fresh choice which works to provide quality nutritious food to communities that need it, BACH The Bay Area Coalition to protect Headwaters (forest) and this project, the Zero Waste Fellowship.
